The Solidarity Economy
In autumn 2022, I created motion graphics for an online video course about The Solidarity Economy, created by Art.coop and produced by Meerkat Media. The videos are hosted by Ebony Gustave and Rad Periera from CreativeStudy.com, an educational resource that aims to help artists and independent creatives build and maintain financially sustainable careers.
To quote a definition from the script: “The Solidarity Economy is a term used internationally to describe community-control of work, food, education, money, wellness, housing, and culture.”
Despite the tight deadline and a high number of deliverables, this was an enjoyable project to work on since I don't usually get the chance to composite graphics onto live-action footage.
Illustration Reference
At the beginning of the project, I created a deck presenting 3 different creative directions. This slide features the work of Saul Bass, which was the main inspiration for the illustrations throughout the videos.
Sketches
I drew some sketches after getting approval from the client on the creative direction.

Animated String Rig
I created a rig to animate the various strings using DUIK Bassel. This allowed me to easily get a natural-looking animation that was flexible and easy to change based on what the hosts were doing or reacting to.

Behind the Scenes
These videos give some insight into how I composited the illustrations into the footage. I tracked and rotoscoped the hosts’ hands and arms and used DUIK Bassel to animate the strings.
